Basement Water From Clogged Downspouts?

It rains, and a day later there's a damp stripe along the basement wall, or a puddle near the corner. Before you assume the worst about your foundation, look at the downspout on the outside of that same corner. In Akron, it's one of the most common culprits.
How Downspouts Put Water in Basements
Your roof collects a lot of water. In a one-inch rain, an average roof sends hundreds of gallons to the gutters. Every gallon leaves through a handful of downspouts. If a downspout is clogged, that water overflows the gutter and lands right next to the foundation. If the downspout empties at the base of the wall, the water soaks straight down beside your basement.
Signs the Downspout Is to Blame
- Dampness or puddles in the basement corner nearest a downspout
- Gutters overflowing at the downspout end during rain
- A downspout that trickles or stays dry while the gutter overflows
- Soil washed out, or a low, soggy spot at the base of the downspout
- Efflorescence (white chalky residue) on the inside of the foundation wall near that corner
- Underground drain lines that bubble up, back up or never seem to drain
The Common Downspout Problems
1. A clog at the top or at an elbow
Leaves, maple seeds and shingle grit jam where the gutter drains into the downspout, or at the elbows.
2. Downspouts that end at the foundation
A downspout that drops water right at the wall, without an extension or splash block, is asking for a wet basement.
3. Clogged underground drains
Many Akron homes have downspouts tied into buried drain pipes. When those clog with debris or roots, water backs up and soaks the ground by the foundation.
4. Disconnected or crushed sections
Lawn mowers, ice and kids knock downspout sections loose, so water exits where it shouldn't.
What You Can Check Today
- During rain, watch each downspout. Is water flowing out the bottom?
- Look at where each downspout ends. Is the water carried at least several feet from the house?
- Check the ground slope. Does soil by the foundation slope away from the house, or toward it?
- Look inside at the basement corners nearest each downspout.
How It Gets Fixed
- Clear the gutters and flush every downspout.
- Add extensions or splash blocks to carry water away from the foundation.
- Reattach or replace crushed and disconnected sections.
- Flag clogged underground lines, which may need separate clearing.
- Upsize downspouts to 3x4 inches where they keep clogging or can't keep up.
