Gutters Sagging or Pulling Away From the Fascia?
Published October 14, 2026 ยท More articles
From the driveway you can see it: one stretch of gutter dips in the middle, or there's a gap between the gutter and the roof edge. Sometimes water pours behind it in the rain. A gutter pulling away from the fascia only gets worse, especially once snow and ice load it up.
Why It Matters
When a gutter sags, water pools in the low spot instead of draining. The extra weight pulls harder on the hangers. When it pulls away from the fascia, rain runs down behind the gutter, soaking the fascia board, the soffit and sometimes the wall and foundation below.
The Usual Causes
1. Weight from debris and water
A gutter packed with wet leaves is heavy. Over a season or two, the weight bends hangers and pulls fasteners loose. This is the most common cause in tree-heavy Akron neighborhoods.
2. Failed or too few hangers
Older gutters often hang on spikes driven through the gutter into the fascia. Spikes work loose over time. Hangers spaced too far apart let the gutter sag between them.
3. Rotted fascia
If the board behind the gutter has rotted, fasteners have nothing to grip. You'll often see dark staining or peeling paint behind the gutter. โ Fascia & soffit repair
4. Ice and snow load
Northeast Ohio winters put ice in gutters, and ice is heavy. A run that was barely hanging on in fall often lets go in February. โ Ice in gutters
5. Ladders leaned against the gutter
It happens. A ladder resting on a gutter can kink it or break hangers.
What to Check From the Ground
- Is the sag in one spot, or along the whole run?
- Is there a visible gap at the top between gutter and roof edge?
- Do you see staining, peeling or soft-looking wood behind the gutter?
- Does water spill out of the low spot or behind the gutter in rain?
- Are the gutters full of debris?
How It Gets Fixed
- Clean the gutters first, so the weight is gone and the pitch can be checked.
- Re-hang with hidden hangers screwed into solid fascia, spaced closer together.
- Re-pitch the run so water flows to the downspout instead of pooling.
- Replace rotted fascia before re-hanging, if the board is soft.
- Replace bent sections, or the whole run if the gutter is kinked or rusted.
